Next ACE Machine Tool Training Hub Planned for North Carolina

Techniks Industries (Indianapolis, Indiana), a tooling provider for the metalworking and woodworking industries, has acquired the tooling assets of Parlec Inc. (Fairport, New York). The acquisition expands Techniks’ product offering of aftermarket machine Tungsten Carbide Inserts tool accessories and enhances its manufacturing and distribution capabilities to distributors and OEMs located throughout North America.

Parlec says it will retain its presetter business under the Omega Tool Measuring Machines brand. The Parlec tooling division will continue to operate as an independent company, branded Parlec LLC under the Techniks Industries umbrella. Parlec says that in January 2016, its executive team decided to view the company as two separate businesses, one focused on tooling, the other on presetting. The market strategies for these two businesses differed and their market growth was found to be compromised as a result. Techniks’ acquisition of the tooling branch is intended to enable better growth to maintain competition.

“With a global network that spans throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, Lathe Carbide Inserts Parlec’s reach opens the world to Techniks Industries and Techniks Industries to the world,” says Vernon Cameron, president and CEO of Techniks Industries.

Inserts Feature Six Cutting Edges

Tungaloy has launched a new turning tool concept, AddMultiTurn, which features unique insert and toolholder geometries that enable multi-directional VNMG Insert turning.

AddMultiTurn provides the flexibility for outer diameter, face and profile turning operations in multi directions, which include high-feed back (pull) turning method, enabling toolpaths that turn in the opposite direction of conventional turning process at higher feeds. Multi-directional turning reportedly optimizes the toolpaths by eliminating air cutting times. The shapes of the AddMultiTurn inserts enable the user to achieve a much smaller entry angle and thinner chips for higher machining efficiency, which spreads load and heat over a longer cutting edge length, providing extended insert tool life.

AddMultiTurn uses two styles of inserts depending on the application, both of which feature a double-sided design with six Metal Cutting Insert total cutting edges: 6C-TOMG..TM inserts with 80° nose angle are designed for medium to rough turning and 6V-TOMG..TSF inserts with 35° nose angle is suited for finish turning. Both inserts enable a back (pull) turning method, which the company says can contribute to higher productivity and reduced machining costs compared with conventional ISO turning inserts. AddMultiTurn inserts can also be used for push turning just as with ISO turning inserts.

In addition, the Y-Prism safe lock design provides a rail on the shim and matching slots on the insert, reportedly ensuring tight interlocking and secure clamping of the insert during high productive multi-directional turning.

YG 1’s Aerospace Tools Provide High Metal Removal Rates

Hard milling is becoming an essential part of mold manufacturing by eliminating time-consuming processes and costly finishing operations, while producing higher-quality parts than those manufactured with traditional machining methods. In order to machine rough hardened stainless steel, shop floors require a machining center built to handle the challenging parameters of hard-to-machine metals.

The machine construction of Toyoda’s FH630SX-i horizontal machining center withstands large cutting resistance and inertial forces of feed acceleration and deceleration, while the Meehanite cast iron base Carbide Milling Inserts and column promote superior strength. Another key element when it comes to milling hardened stainless steel is the spindle design. The 8,000-rpm, 1,009-Nm (744 ft-lb) high-torque spindle on the FH630SX-i HMC is equipped with four bearings at the front of the spindle, double row cylindrical roller bearings located over the taper to provide radial rigidity, and dual angular bearings to maximize axial stability. This combination keeps the tool stable and allows for faster removal rates under heavy radial loads. The FH630SX-i high torque spindle is supported by dual ballscrews and motors on the Y and Z axes for rapid acceleration and consistent accuracy without any imbalanced cutting forces.

At IMTS, Toyoda will be featuring an on-site demonstration of Toyoda’s FH630SX-i horizontal machining center cutting through gravity turning inserts 17-4 PH stainless steel using Tungaloy cutting tools designed specifically for difficult-to-machine materials.

The Hidden Costs Of Cutting Tools

For precision machining, what properties should tool materials have?

If you are in the business of precision machining, you know that the quality of your tools is critical. The process of cutting metal is carried out under high cutting temperature and severe friction conditions. Therefore, in the process of machining precision parts, the length of tool life and the level of cutting efficiency, Depending on the tool material, the tool material determines the fundamental factor of the cutting performance of the tool, and has a great impact on the efficiency, quality of processing, cost of processing and tool durability In order to achieve the desired results, you need materials that have the right properties. Here are some things to consider when choosing tool VNMG Insert materials.

High hardness: The hardness of the tool material needs to be higher than that of the workpiece material to cut metal, and the hardness should reach above 60HRC at room temperature.

High wears resistance: Wears resistance is expressed as the ability of the tool material to resist wear. Usually, the higher the hardness, the better the wears resistance of the material.

Sufficient strength and toughness: The tool material needs to have sufficient strength and toughness to ensure that the tool can withstand sufficient total cutting force, shock and vibration during the normal cutting process of precision machining to prevent chipping or brittle fracture of the tool.

High heat resistance: Heat resistance, also known as hard heat, refers to the ability of tool PVD Coated Insert materials to maintain cutting performance at high temperatures, and it is the main indicator to measure the performance of tool materials.

Good Processability: In order to facilitate the production of knives, the knives are required to have good machinability and heat treatment process. Machinability mainly refers to cutting performance and welding performance. Heat Treatment refers to small heat treatment deformation, thin decarburization layer and good hardenability.

The process performance of the precision machining tool material also has a significant influence on the quality of the tool itself. Therefore, cutting material of the tool must meet the above five requirements.

Collaboratively Developed Laser Cutter Uses Custom CNC for Dynamic Gap Control

ModuleWorks has released the 2015.12 version of its CAM software, which includes new features for five- and three-axis programming as well as simulation.

For five-axis programming, a new “extend curve” feature automatically extends curves when a surface extends beyond the ends of a curve. This feature prevents unwanted wrap-around of the toolpath, improving the pattern and saving time by eliminating the need to manually extend the curves, the company says. The software also includes enhanced automatic spine creation for port machining. If the spine gets Carbide Grooving Inserts too close to the machining surface at any point, the toolpath with full collision checking is created up to that point. A new projection method for geodesic machining projects the containment curve in the surface normal direction for the selected machining surfaces.

New trimming criteria for three-axis programing provide more efficient processing of cusps near the containment curve by preserving all the cuts where the tool contact points are inside it. A “multiple stock to leave” feature enables users to define different rest material thicknesses for different machining surfaces. According to the company, this is useful for die/mold production that involves multiple machining steps with heat treatment in between. In the case of multiple machining surface offsets, the enhanced roughing algorithms speed up roughing Face Milling Inserts calculation.

For simulation, an automatic quality-improvement feature refines the accuracy of the stock model whenever the cutting simulation is idle. This improves accuracy and saves time because there is no need for manual refinement. Additionally, the software now gives users the option to make spindle clamps transparent when the spindle is rotating.
